History

The Native American Clackamas Indians occupied the land diseases brought by early explorers devastated most of the tribe. The Federal Government took control of territory in 1855 and the few Clackamas who remained moved to the Grand Ronde Reservation in nearby Yamhill County.

Lake Oswego has been a quiet gathering of homesteads and farms between the Willamette and Tualatin Rivers in Northern Oregon until the mid1800s. The town of "Oswego" was founded in 1847 by who secured the first Donation Land Claim and named the town after his birthplace in New York.

Albert Alonzo Durham  also built Lake Oswego's first industry, a sawmill on formerly named Sucker Creek, now known as Oswego Creek. Iron ore was first discovered in the Tualatin Valley In 1841,  In 1865, the Oregon Iron Company was incorporated. It was the first of three companies that aspired to turn Oswego into the "Pittsburg of the West." The first iron smelter went into production in 1867 and operated intermittently under the Oswego Iron Company until 1881. The property is now known as George Rogers Park. Later Oregon Iron & Steel Company operated the aging plant until 1885. In 1888, its operators built a new smelter on the current Oswego Pointe site.

In 1886 a narrow gauge railroad was built between Portland and Oswego. Oswego was a remote location which could only be reached by river boats and dirt roads until Southern Pacific Railroad acquired the line and widened it to standard gauge. In 1914 the line electrified using rapid, clean, and quiet trains which made residential development in Oswego in the 1920s and 1930s possible.

The end of the iron industry prompted the Oregon Iron & Steel, which owned 24,000 acres, to begin land development projects in the area. The company built a power plant on Oswego Creek from 1905 to 1909. The Oregon Iron & Steel Company then sold large tracts of land to developers such as Paul Murphy and the Ladd Estate Company who undertook residential development in the area.

The of the City of Oswego was incorporated  in 1910. In 1926, the first City Hall was built on A Avenue between State and First Streets.

Paul Murphy,  Oswego Lake Country Club, developer promoted coined the phrase "live where you play" and built the first water system to serve the west end of the city. Oswego's reputation for fine homes is due to Murphy's  "for people with taste" influence during the 1930s and '40s. Oswego Lake's residential development steadily increased by the mid 50s and the city of Oswego's name was changed to Lake Oswego in 1960 as Lake Grove was annexed west of the city.
